What kit will I need?

Spring and Summer essentials

Spring, summer and autumn hill walking in Scotland all start with the same basic kit, you just add or subtract warmth as required.

  • Rucksack - about 30 litres
  • Waterproof rucksack liner
  • Boots or trail trainers with soles which will grip on rock, grass and mud
  • Waterproof jacket (with hood)
  • Waterproof overtrousers
  • General trekking trousers (not jeans)
  • T shirt (not cotton)
  • Long sleeved top
  • Gaiters (not always essential)
  • Hat and gloves
  • Spare layer e.g. fleece top
  • Compass (for navigation courses)
  • Map (for navigation courses)
  • Watch (for navigation courses)
  • Torch (preferably a head torch)
  • Food & Drink
  • Emergency survival bag
  • Whistle
  • First Aid Kit (personal)
  • Mobile phone
  • Sunhat
  • Sun cream
  • Sunglasses
  • Midge repellent & head net

Winter

Winter hill walking in Scotland is most definitely mountaineering and needs a little more kit.

  • Rucksack - about 45 litres
  • Waterproof rucksack liner
  • Boots with stiff soles able to accept a crampon
  • Waterproof jacket (with hood)
  • Waterproof overtrousers
  • Thermal trousers
  • Thermal top
  • Fleece top
  • Gaiters
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves
  • Spare gloves
  • Spare layer e.g. fleece top
  • Compass
  • Map (waterproof or in waterproof case)
  • Watch
  • Torch (preferably a head torch)
  • Spare head torch + batteries
  • Food & Drink
  • Spare food
  • Emergency survival bag
  • Bothy bag appropriate for size of group
  • Whistle
  • First Aid Kit (personal)
  • Mobile phone
  • Goggles
  • Ice axe (and the skills to use it)
  • Crampons (and the skills to use them)

If you are struggling for kit, particularly ice axes, crampons, tents, sleeping bags, mats and stoves, get in touch as I have some additional equipment that I can loan you. Please be aware if you damage wayymark outdoor loaned kit, you will be required to replace it.
