Distance Learning First Aid for Mental Health SCQF Level 5

Our Award in First Aid for Mental Health delivers a minimum of 6 hours of theory and practical instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 16 delegates. This one day course is aimed at providing delegates with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation, reduce stigma and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. Delegates will learn how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse. They will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

Delegates will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, as this can only be carried out by a health care profession, but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person many have a condition and know where they can go to get help.

This course consists of on line lecture, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

The contents are

  • Defining mental health
  • Understand the stigma surrounding mental health
  • Identify factors that can affect a person's mental health
  • Understand the role of a first aider for mental health
  • Outline the advice that should be provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition
  • Know when to contact emergency services
  • Identify signs of stress and how stress can be managed
  • Identify signs and symptoms for the following mental health conditions; depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, suicide and self harm.
  • Effects of alcohol and drug abuse on a person's mental health
  • Demonstrate the application of the first aid action plan for mental health
  • Key factors in providing a positive mental health culture in the workplace
  • How to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace

Assessment Criteria

Learners must successfully demonstrate the application of the first aid action plan for mental health by completing the scenario as detailed on the FAA Practical Assessment Record. Reasonable prompting by the trainer/assessor is acceptable but trainer/assessors must be confident of the learner’s competence and knowledge before marking the scenario as completed.

Professional discussion is a structured two-way conversation between the trainer/assessor and learner. The trainer/assessor should follow the FAA Professional Discussion Record and ensure that a learner has the required knowledge and understanding by successfully answering each question. If the learner does not understand the question the trainer/assessor can reword but must not lead the learner to the answer.

You will take the class on your computer or tablet from home or at your workplace. A web cam and microphone are required. Because this is still a live class with an instructor, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with other students just as you would in a traditional class. Distance Learning Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 4

Our Distance Learning Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of zoom based theory and practical instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 16 delegates. This half day course is aimed at providing delegates with the knowledge and skills to start a supportive conversation, reduce stigma and be able to signpost the person towards professional help.

Delegates must be at least 14 years old to attend this course and it is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy, or equivalent due to the multiple choice examination at the end of the course.

Those who achieve this qualification could progress onto the FAA Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health, or the FAA Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health.

The course content is as follows

  • Defining mental health
  • Understand the stigma surrounding mental health
  • Identify factors that can affect a person's mental health
  • Understand the role of a first aider for mental health
  • Outline the advice that should be provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition
  • Know when to contact emergency services
  • Identify signs of stress
  • State how stress can be managed
  • Identify signs and symptoms for the following mental health conditions; depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, suicide and self harm.
